Meanwhile, the long-awaited summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un took place at 9 a.m. this morning. While, Kim said though it wasn't easy but they were able to overcome obstacles to be here today.
The media take photos of U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un prior to the start of their meeting in Singapore on June 12.
The two leaders posed together at 9:04 a.m. on June 12 with their countries' flags as the backdrop. Trump even squeezed Kim's arm at one point. Kim maintained a serious demeanor and appeared to be nervous. The two leaders and their interpreters then headed into the meeting room for their one-on-one meeting.
I feel really great, we're going to have a great discussion and I think tremendous success. We will be tremendously successful, and it's my honor and we will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt.
Well, it was not easy to get here. We overcame many obstacles to accomplish this (meeting).
The length of the closed-door meeting was shorter than the expected 45 minutes. At around 10 a.m., the two leaders and their advisors headed to a room for bilateral talks. There were whispers that a Korean War peace treaty could be negotiated during this meeting.
And we'll solve a big problem - a big dilemma - that until this point has been unable to be solved, and I know that working together we will get it taken care of. It's a great honor, thank you very much.
The meeting was followed by a working lunch. The U.S. delegation included White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, as well as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton, who flanked Trump. The North Korean delegation included Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea Vice Chairperson Kim Yong-chol, WPK International Affairs Department Director Ri Su-yong and Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho. Earlier in the day, Kim and Trump's motorcades arrived at 8 a.m. and 8:12 a.m., respectively. Many people gathered by the side of the road to watch the motorcades pass by.
