A gun salute and a performance by a military band marked the welcoming ceremony for Kingdom of eSwatini King Mswati III. The Kingdom of eSwatini is the only diplomatic ally the Republic of China has left in Africa. The king is currently visiting Taiwan. This year is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties, and the king also celebrated his 50th birthday in 2018. In her speech, President Tsai Ing-wen thanked the Kingdom of eSwatini for its support of Taiwan on the international stage.

The Kingdom of eSwatini gives voice to Taiwan's international participation, and is never absent. Our friend was there for us in September last year at the United Nations General Assembly, and last month at the World Health Assembly to speak out on behalf of Taiwan's interests and to take a stand for us. I want to express our gratitude to Your Majesty King Mswati III.

Tsai visited the Kingdom of eSwatini in April. On June 7, the king watched a drill that was part of the Han Kuang military exercises. He said the foundation of the bilateral relationship was set by the previous king, and his country thanks Taiwan for its support in areas such as finance, aviation and agriculture. He promised to strengthen the bilateral relationship in the future and support Taiwan's participation in international organizations.

Our bilateral relationship, Your Excellency, is [rooted] on a very strong foundation that was established by our predecessors. Our task before us as leaders is to guide and protect it jealously for the benefit of our two countries.

The king is not only in Taiwan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the bilateral relationship, but also to attend his son's graduation from Shih Chien University on June 9.
