The Dominican Republic and Burkina Faso broke off official ties with Taiwan in recent months. President Tsai Ing-wen said that Taiwan will no longer tolerate pressure from China. On the other hand, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said that they will rigorously screen Chinese officials traveling to Taiwan.
In order to ensure the safety of our country and the well-being of our people, we will apply necessary screening measures on Chinese officials traveling to Taiwan. This move is necessary for defensive purposes.
The MAC said that the more rigorous screening measures will only apply to incoming Chinese officials, not tourists or students. On the other hand, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that he hopes Swaziland, currently Taiwan's ally and the only country in Africa that has not formed ties with China, would establish ties with them in the future. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu stressed that ties with the ally remain solid.
