More tension between China and Taiwan, but this time, in the digital realm. According to Taiwan's military data, there were over 700 million cyberattacks from China to Taiwan's military websites in 2014 and hundreds of millions every subsequent year. Taiwan's military says, the cyberattacks have focused on military hospital websites. Military experts say the attacks are aimed at stealing medical information of Taiwan's military and their family members, to facilitate stealing further military intelligence.

According to Taiwan's military, the PRC launches hundreds of millions of cyberattacks on Taiwan's military websites every year, with a special focus on military hospital websites.

I'm getting a physical exam for military service. It sounds possible that information would be leaked.

The Ministry of National Defense says various information and service websites under the ministry, including executive offices, National Defense University, the ministry's recruitment center, military hospitals and the Military News Agency, have been attacked in the past. In particular, 160 million cyberattacks on military hospital websites were recorded last year. According to the ministry, the PRC launched over 700 million cyberattacks on Taiwanese websites in 2014, 500 million in 2015, 300 million in 2016 and 200 million in 2017.

Regardless of whether it's the data of our military or their families, or civilian patients, we will take measures to protect the information well.

Military experts say intelligence can be costly and it is more cost-effective to steal information on military officers and their family members from military hospitals. With this information in hand, China can collect intelligence more easily.

Relatively speaking, military hospitals have more interaction with the outside world and therefore aren't as strict with information security when it comes to protecting (the personal information) of the military and their dependents.

The ministry says military websites are housed on physically isolated servers with information security centers overseeing the websites, and this is why the number of cyberattacks has fallen every year.
