Aside from pressuring Taiwan's diplomatic ties, China further initiated military training exercises at the time. The Ministry of National Defense has confirmed reports that Chinese Xian H-6 strategic bombers circled Taiwan during training exercises on the morning and evening of May 25. Analysts believe this was an attempt by China to show it has the ability to attack Taiwan at night.
Taiwan is currently holding its annual Han Kuang military drills. On May 25, China sent out Xian H-6 strategic bombers based on its Liaoning aircraft carrier to circle Taiwan during nighttime training exercises. This was the first time these aircraft had been involved in nighttime training exercises. Two Xian H-6 strategic bombers passed through the Bashi Channel at 4 a.m., and then entered the Miyako Strait. Analysts believe China was showing that it is capable of attacking Taiwan at night.
The Chinese military aircraft may have detoured for monitoring purposes. I think we have completely grasped the situation and there won't be any accidents.
Once they cross the halfway line of the channel, we will take a hard-line response. I think so far with regards to this point, China is still afraid of the consequences.
Meanwhile, Kuomintang legislators pointed out China not only managed to poach Burkina Faso, but is now also conducting nighttime training exercises. They believe China's intent is clear.
Cross-strait relations are strained, while U.S.-Taiwan relations are changing. Is that enough for them to take action? We need to prepare well and respond accordingly.
All of these troubles have the same origin, which is your choice to walk on the Taiwan independence path. Do you really think cross-strait relations can become harmonious, and our diplomatic situation will improve? I don't think so.
The Ministry of National Defense said the military sent aircraft to monitor the Chinese aircraft and take pictures. It added the Air Force has the situation under control and people need not worry.
Our Air Force knows when they enter into our air space. We sent aircraft and warships to monitor them for the entire route until they departed.
The Air Force refused to speculate if the nighttime exercises were meant to show China has the ability to attack at night. It merely said ground-based anti-aircraft defense units, radars and fighter aircraft monitored the Chinese planes during the entire exercise.
