U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a joint news conference in Washington on May 23. They were asked whether the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take place as scheduled. Pompeo responded that he hopes countries including China will fulfill their obligations to facilitate the summit, while Wang said now is the best opportunity to resolve the Korean peninsula issue, hinting that delaying the summit would not be smart.

If you want peace, now is the time. If you want to make history, now is the time.

Several Chinese journalists asked what the current U.S. policy towards Taiwan is, after the U.S. Congress passed the Taiwan Travel Act, which permits exchanges of high-level officials between Taiwan and the U.S., and proposed defense policy bills to strengthen Taiwan's national defense capabilities. Pompeo responded that the U.S.' position has not changed, while Wang called on the U.S. to uphold the one China policy.

We are ready to work to implement the series of consensuses reached by the two presidents, including respecting each other's major interests and properly handling Taiwan and other sensitive issues.

The U.S. recently disinvited China from participating in military exercises in the South China Sea due to its militarization in that area. According to Wang, China is only building civilian and some necessary defense facilities on its own islands, and it is completely compliant with international law. He called the U.S.' decision "an unconstructive move" and "unhelpful to mutual understanding between China and the U.S."
