National Sun Yat-sen University recently held a referendum on whether the bronze statues of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek that are currently in front of the library should remain there or to be moved. Students voted to keep Sun and move Chiang.
The result of the vote is, over 90 percent voted to keep the statue of the Father of the Nation, Mr. Sun Yat-sen, where it is. Our university was named after him, after all. Less than 50 percent voted to keep the Chiang Kai-shek (statue) where it is.
The Chiang Kai-shek statue will be moved to another location on campus. There are some students here that want to erase all remnants of martial law from history. This is why the vote went the way it did.
The university says this was the first referendum in the school history and the first referendum ever held by a Taiwan university on a statue of a political figure. No decision has been made on where the Chiang statue will be relocated. The school says it will hold a fundraiser for the relocation expenses.
