President Tsai Ing-wen attended Swaziland's 50th anniversary celebration and Swazi King Mswati the third's 50th birthday celebration. Tsai said Taiwan and Swaziland are close friends, like "sworn brothers" while Mswati the third announced that he is rectifying the name of the country to eSwatini.
The president of the Republic of China is announced as she enters the venue. President Tsai Ing-wen was the only foreign head of state at the joint celebration of Swaziland's 50 years of independence and Swazi King Mswati III's 50th birthday. She spoke a few words before the king's address, saying another "50" should be added to the 50/50 celebrations for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the Republic of China and Swaziland. Tsai also said the two sides would continue promoting educational, medical, agricultural and basic infrastructure ties.
In our own language, a good description for Taiwan-Swaziland relations is "sworn brothers." We believe when Swaziland does well, Taiwan does well.
Tsai was seated next to Mswati III and they spoke several times. The cameras also caught Tsai using a crib sheet to try to remember the names of the dignitaries seated around her in the hopes of having the chance to talk to them.
Thank you. Taiwan.
The evening's program included traditional and modern dance and honor guard performances. Military helicopters, jets and gyroplanes also flew overheard as part of the program.
The highlight of the evening was when Mswati III announced Swaziland was changing its name, which dates back to the era of British rule, to eSwatini.
Swaziland, from today forward, we shall be called the Kingdom of eSwatini.
The king also said he would continue supporting ROC membership in international organizations. In addition, he called on the United Nations to accept the ROC as a member, saying the UN is not truly complete without the ROC.
