ROC: Chinese Military Exercise on 4/18 "Routine"|共軍4/18台海實彈軍演 我國防部:例行演習

China will hold a live-fire military exercise in the Taiwan Strait on Apr. 18, according to media reports. The exercise featuring over 10, 000 troops, is believed to be the largest scale in history. The Ministry of National Defense tries to downplay its effect, saying it's a routine military activity, while lawmakers believe it's nothing but a strategy to create tension.

On the 12th, PRC President Xi Jinping attended a military parade in Nanhai. The parade, hailed as the largest in history, featured 48 ships, 76 aircraft and over 10,000 troops. On the same day, the state-owned "Global Times" reported that the People's Liberation Army would hold a live-fire drill near Kinmen in the Taiwan Strait on the 18th. Fujian's Maritime Safety Administration also issued a warning.

Certain troops in the Chinese Communists' People's Liberation Army hold routine live-fire training exercises. So, these are all routine. In previous years, we have always monitored the situation. There is no cause for concern.

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense says it keeps a close watch on Taiwan's waters and air space and this is a routine exercise. Coincidentally or not, ROC President Tsai Ing-wen took part in her first military fleet inspection the following day and will be traveling to Africa on the 18th. Experts and lawmakers say the report may be "fake news" aimed at manufacturing cross-strait tension.

It's a small-scale military exercise, but they spoke through the media. The goal of the Chinese Communists in speaking through the media is very clear. They want to manufacture tension and terror within Taiwan.

In reality, their training exercise is still confined to Quanzhou. It doesn't look like they plan to expand the exercise beyond that.

The PLA often makes its presence felt in the Taiwan Strait. In March, Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning entered the northeast corner of Taiwan's air defense identification zone. In September 2015, the PLA announced a three-day, live-fire missile exercise near Fujian's Quanzhou coinciding with Taiwan's Han Kuang exercise. The ROC Presidential Office says the military is on top of things and everyone should therefore refrain from panicking.
