Taiwan is officially an aging society. Statistics show Taiwan's over-65 population now accounts for one-seventh of the total population. Chiayi City has the highest population of senior citizens in Taiwan, while Taipei ranks first among the six special municipalities.

Taiwan's over-65 population hit one-seventh, or 14.05 percent, of the total population at the end of March. This is on par with Asian nations like Japan and South Korea.

Taiwanese people are having fewer children while our medical standards keep improving. People care more about health and wellness. This also affects an aging society.

Taiwan's senior population surpassed 7 percent in 1993 and outnumbered the youth population for the first time last February. Taiwan will turn from an aging society to a "super-aged" society in eight years, when the over-65 population surpasses 20 percent. Chiayi City has the highest percentage of seniors in Taiwan with 18.61 percent, while Taipei City ranks first among the six special municipalities. One expert says Taiwanese society will be heavily impacted by changes to the population structure in the next seven years.

Consumption, medical and health care, and residential patterns will be affected by changes to the population structure. Of course, with fewer young people, the government's tax revenues will also fall.

The expert says the government needs to offer tax reductions to baby boomers whose parents are still alive. In addition, the government should upgrade barrier-free facilities and offer caregiver training services so that more baby boomers can take care of themselves.
