Chen has been confirmed to take over the post of Secretary General at the Presidential Office. Chen said that her team at the Kaohsiung municipal government office had gone through lengthy discussions before reaching the decision for her to end her term as mayor half of year early.
The administration is currently facing a lot of difficulties in its reform effort, and I hope to do what I can to help out. I think we should devote our life in making Taiwan better. And for that purpose, I agreed to leave my term as mayor early.
Chen said that her main tasks as the secretary general will be to assist President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier William Lai to tackle the challenges they face in the reform process. She also said that she will try to convince ex-Premier Su Tseng-Chang to run for New Taipei City mayor.
Mr. Su is a person who has the cardinal principles in mind. He had a lot of experience in pushing reform in Taiwan during the martial law period. I think at a critical moment like this, he will stand in line and work along with us.
Chen said that Su Tseng-Chang had a brilliant political career in New Taipei City in the past, so she hopes he will be able to work with President Tsai Ing-wen again in the future as New Taipei City mayor.
