The Taiwan Power Company published the latest estimation for the island-wide power consumption in the next two months. The estimation shows that the reserve power will fall below 5 percent during the second half of April and might trigger a code orange warning. On the other hand, the company said that the repair on power plants in Taichung and Kaohsiung have been completed, which will allow them to begin operation in May and bring the power reserve level to above 6 percent.

The temperature is quickly rising up at the beginning of April. The plan to reboot the number two nuclear reactor in the second power plant was to accommodate for the increasing need for electricity during the summer. However, the reactor unexpectedly shut off last week, just one day after it came back online after a two-year suspension. The Ministry of Economics said that they are uncertain on when the rector will come back online before the Atomic Energy Council gives their assessment of the situation at the Legislature.

The engineers from Singapore were holding discussions on the situation with the second nuclear plant at around 10pm last night. (When will the reactor come back online?) I cannot give a definite answer for now. We must respect their expertise.

The number one reactor of the third nuclear power plant will also begin its scheduled annual check-up, which will further reduce the power output by close to 1 million kilowatts. The public has shown concern on the power grid's capability to sustain the increased usage in April. Taipower Company has released their latest estimation on the island-wide power consumption in the next two months. It is estimated that the reserve power will fall below 5 percent during the second half of April, which will trigger a code orange warning. On the other hand, the company said that the repair on power plants in Taichung and Kaohsiung have been completed, which will allow them to begin operation in May and bring the power reserve level to above 6 percent.

In the months of May, several of our power plants, including the one in Taichung and in Kaohsiung will have completed their repair and subsequently begin their operation. The number one reactor of the third nuclear plant is estimated to come back online as well on May 17.

Economics Minister Shen Jong-chin also commented on the upcoming electricity price increase, saying that 80% of the general public and small business owners will not be affected.
