France's Prime Minister Edouard Philippe declared victory for President Emmanuel Macron's new centrist party, La Republique En Marche, with around 32.2 percent of the votes, in the first round of parliamentary elections. There will be a second round on June 18. Macron's party is now comfortably ahead of the ten other parties going into that second round for the 577 seats in the lower house National Assembly. Philippe pledged to move ahead quickly with bold reforms to French worker protections and security policy. He said voters sent a message "without ambiguity" in the first round of elections that they want a parliament with a "new face". Catherine Barbaroux, Interim President of Macron's La Republique En Marche party appealed to voters to confirm their choice for her party's candidates in the second round on June 18. En Marche is projected to win a strong majority. French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who gained just 14 percent of the vote, accused her country of "lacking interest in politics", following the low turnout in the first round of the elections.
