The 2017 Winter Special Olympics was held in Austria in March, and among the 40 medals the Chinese Taipei team took home this year, 15 were won by Kaohsiung's 11-person team. Here's our report.

Wang Chia-hui, winner of the gold 100 meter skiing medal, stood happily on the winners' podium, listening to the cheers. This year, the triumphant Kaohsiung City team took home five gold, three silver and seven bronze medals from the 2017 Winter Special Olympics. Wang alone won one individual gold and bronze, as well as a team bronze.

Taiwan has no snow, so we train on the sand, after we went to the competition we found that it is easier to run on snow, I know why it is easier to run on it

In subtropical Taiwan, the skiing team had to train on sand instead of snow. To get used to low temperatures, they climbed Mount Ali prior to competing in Austria. For Du Shu-juan, who studies at Kaohsiung Municipal School for Students with Disabilities, the trip was her first competition abroad. She did not win gold but she did make friends.

She was brave enough to pro-actively approach international competitors to chat, although there was a language barrier, they used expressions or handshakes or hugs and had fun.

Another student from the school, Yang Li-ting is introverted and shy. During training, she constantly wanted to go home, but she persisted and won a gold medal for speed skating.

There was a lot of progress this time and traveling abroad is a good life experience for them so they've grown in the process.

The goal of the Special Olympics is to offer differently-abled competitors a chance to build teamwork and communication skills, The team is now more confident about their interaction with others.
