WEI CHUAN FORMER CHAIR SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS OVER OIL SCANDAL|混油案 魏應充二審改判2年徒刑定讞

A court verdict that convicted former Wei Chuan Chairman Wei Ying-Chun of fraud over a tainted oil scandal in 2013 was upheld by the Intellectual Property Court yesterday, but his sentence was reduced from 4 to 2 years. The ruling is final and cannot be appealed, thus putting an end to one of the largest, most high-profile food scandals in recent years. ==WEI YING-CHUNG Former Chairman, Wei Chuan Foods Corporation== I apologize to everyone with great sincerity. On Apr.27, the Intellectual Property Court sentenced former Wei Chuan Foods Corporation Chairman Wei Ying-chung two years in prison over a tainted oil scandal. Wei was accused of instructing his employees to mix the company's olive oil products with Chang Chi Foodstuff Factory Co.'s oils that contain copper chlorophyllin to reduce costs. In an effort to gain market share, Wei and his company also changed the formula of its olive oil products. Although branded as premium class olive oil, the products contained only 1 percent of olive oil, with the rest consisting of 98 percent cheap palm oil and 1 percent grapeseed oil. Falsifying product labels and misleading consumers, Wei was charged with obtaining money by false pretense in the second trial. The ruling cannot be further appealed. ==CHEN JHONG- SING Division-Chief Judge of Intellectual Property Court== Defendants, including Wei Ying-chung, attempted to reduce production costs, gain market share and increase profits by increasing the percentage of palm oil to 98 percent in the company's blended oil products. The illegal profits were as high as NT$ 61,118,049. Wei was originally sentenced to four years in prison in the first trial. However, as there was not enough evidence to show that Wei could foresee the oil adulteration, the Intellectual Property Court decided to reduce his sentence. Meanwhile, Wei Chuan Foods Corporation was found not guilty. ==YU MING-HSIEN lawyer== Wei hopes that his conscience is clear.
