DIOXIN CHECKS ON SIX EGG FARMS IN SAME CHANGHUA VILLAGE|

Eggs contaminated with dioxin, the so-called "toxin of the century" have been discovered in Taiwan. The contaminated eggs were found in the Wanggong Egg Store in Changhua. While three egg farms have already been identified as suppliers to the egg store, the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Council of Agriculture have discovered six additional egg farms as possible sources of the eggs. Pre-emptive inspections have been carried out on the six farms, but egg farmers have slammed the government for damaging their reputation by publishing their details before the inspection reports have been issued. Dressed in hazmat suits, inspectors from the Food and Drug Administration and Council of Agriculture are taking samples of chicken feed, drinking water, and eggs for inspection. The FDA has identified six additional egg farms as possible sources for dioxin-contaminated eggs, in addition to the three announced previously. All six farms are located in Wanggong Village in Changhua's Fangyuan Township, so pre-emptive inspections have been conducted for all six. ==WANG CHUNG-SHU Dep. Dir.-Gen., Dept. of Animal Industry, COA== The additional six farms are all located near Wanggong, like the three we discovered previously, all in Wanggong. We suspected a geographical connection, so we've stepped up pre-emptive inspections. However, egg farmers said that the government has been too rash in publishing their details before the inspection results are even out, which has affected the entire egg industry. They also said that all the necessary precautions have been taken and it is still unclear where the problem is. ==EGG FARMER== Was the contamination in one egg, or an entire batch? We're wondering too. We've been thinking very hard about this, but no one knows why this happened. ==EGG FARMER== We don't know either. There are many questions, we don't know. (It might be the feed.) It might be the feed, or maybe the water. We don't know. The contaminated eggs have caused ripples in Taiwanese society. About 45% of all eggs in Taiwan come from Changhua, and 30% of those come from Fangyuan Township. Though 6,785 kilograms of eggs have been recalled, a total of 42 restaurants and one school in New Taipei, Taoyuan, and Miaoli are now suspected of having used contaminated eggs. Consumers and egg farmers alike hope that the problem can be identified soon. TRANSLATED BY:JOHN CHEN
