UBER RESUMES OPERATION IN TAIWAN, AS PARTNER OF RENTAL CAR COMPANIES|改與租賃業者合作 Uber宣布重返台灣

Uber staged a comeback in Taiwan on Thursday after two months' suspension, but this time, it will partner with licensed rental car companies to avoid running afoul of local regulations again. The global ride-hailing service said it has had "constructive talks" with authorities and the update to the app would also allow the service to reach farther, especially into rural areas. So this method is one way, under the current legal framework, that we can re-launch Uber as soon as possible. The re-launched Uber service will be initially offered in the greater Taipei area. The process of hailing a ride remains similar, but a variety of quoted prices will be displayed instead of a single price based on distance. Different companies could offer different prices. A ride from Civic Boulevard Sec. 3 to Kangning Road Sec. 3 in Neihu costs about NT$250 on a regular taxi, NT$219 on UberX, and NT$428 on UberBlack. This is about NT$70 more than the old Uber service. A test also showed that the cars were scarce, with waits of over 30 minutes even if one successfully called a ride. Minister of Transportation Ho Chen Tan said that, if Uber is only offering an information platform for rental car companies, then its operations are not illegal. ==HO CHEN TAN Minister, MOTC== They are now helping car rental companies, and the drivers of these companies, develop a better service. The MOTC's position has always been that Uber must be managed under the law, pay taxes, and offer insurance. So we are glad to see that they are complying with the law in their operations. The MOTC also emphasized that, though Uber is now offering a legal service, they are still liable for the NT$831 million they've accumulated in fines and NT$135 million in unpaid taxes. Uber said that they are currently in litigation regarding the fines and in discussions with the Ministry of Finance and the National Taxation Bureau regarding the taxes.
