MANUFACTURER USES EXPIRED INGREDIENTS FOR 19 PRODUCTS |過期原料再製 遠東油脂賣黑心"乳瑪琳"

The Taoyuan Department of Public Health on Friday evening recalled 19 Far East Oil Mills Co products, including margarine, butter oil substitute and puff pastry for using expired ingredients. As the company could not clarify which product batches contained contaminated ingredients, the department ordered an extended recall for all products with expiry dates of between Sept. 30 and Wednesday. As Far East Oil Mills' products are widely used in the food industry, the Taipei health department informed 20 chain stores to immediately stop using the firm's products. Milkmarrine is a popular butter substitute used as a toast spread in Taiwan. However, an inspection by the Taoyuan City Department of Public Health at a Yuandong Oil Plant in Taoyuan found that the company illegally used expired clarified butter and recycled product to manufacture 19 products, including milkmarrine, totalling 906 tons. 5 tanks of oil were sealed at the site, containing 43,000 kilograms of oil. ==KUAN PAI-CHUAN Taoyuan City DPH Food Admin. The Department of Public Health said that the company was unable to identify the batch of products that used the expired ingredients, so it has ordered the company to recall all products with expiration dates between March 8 and September 30 this year. Doctors say that expired food, particularly expired oil, are vulnerable to microbe contamination and puts people at risk of acute gastroenteritis. ==YEN TSUNG-HAI, Dept. of Renal Medicine Dir., Linkou Chang Gung Hospital== This kind of expired product is often contaminated by microbes. The Department of Public Health stresses that it has confirmed the company was using expired ingredients illegally, and that it will test the products to see if they contain any other harmful substances. Yuandong can be fined between NT$60,000 and NT$200 million for violating the Food Safety Act. The company has issued an apology to the public saying it will offer full refunds to consumers.
