TAIPEI CITY HAS LARGEST ELDERLY POPULATION|老化指數首度破百 北市老人六都最多

The aging society is here, according to the Ministry of Interior statistics, Taipei City has the highest number of seniors among six metropolitan cities. Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je said, the city government is implementing social welfare for seniors including meal sharing , residential care and other services. The city government aims to provide a better and improved long-term care system. The Ministry of Interior released the latest population statistics, Taipei City has the highest number of seniors among six metropolitan cities. The population of 65 years old or above is about 420,000, it outnumbers children whose ages are 14 years old or younger for the second consecutive year. Low birth rate and prolonged average life expectancy are main factors. ==KO WEN-JE Taipei City Mayor== Four years later, Taipei City will have 20% of population whose age is over 65. For population in Taiwan, it is to reach that percentage maybe after five and half years. Therefore in the next few years, whole Taiwan population will face aging situation. This is a serious major problem this country needs to face. Taipei City is implementing social welfare policy for seniors including meal sharing. There are over 110 places providing meal sharing service. Other services include phone greeting, residential care and health promotion. ==KO WEN-JE Taipei City Mayor== Actually we plan to start with meal sharing for seniors, and we will add some other services to it. The whole senior program is gradually starting one by one. We anticipate showing certain level of progress within two years. Some researchers suggest seniors return to work field, because the participation rate from seniors tends to be lower. Some seniors are still healthy while some have strong intention of getting back to work. According to statistics shown by Taipei City Employment Service Office, the number of job seekers with ages of 65 or older is increasing.
