YOUTH WORRIED ABOUT LIVING IN DEBT, SEEK WORK ABROAD|擔心成為"青貧族" 新鮮人爭取海外任職

Many young Taiwanese today seek work abroad in the hope of getting better wages. Analysts say that in Taiwan the reasons for this talent drain, apart from the problem of low wages, are: Taiwan's education system, low overall internationalization and a stagnant economy and manufacturing sector. Speaking English, Japanese, Korean and of course, Chinese and with a PhD in Dance History and Theory from California University, Cheng Kuang-yu returned to Taiwan but could not find a permanent teaching position. He applied to a private university as part-time assistant professor, but the monthly salary was only NT$9,700. He finally found a job overseas in Korea at Hongik University as a Chinese language lecturer. ==CHENG KUANG-YU Chinese language teacher == I went on Google and found a job in Korea. When I first went, the wage was about NT$90,000, by the time I left it was about NT$120 a month. Worried about living permanently in debt, many students look for work abroad. According to Ministry of Labor statistics in 2015 the average wage for university undergraduates was NT$27,655. This is lower than 16 years ago when it was NT$28,016. For those with graduate degrees in 2015, the average wage was NT$32,638. Prof. == An enterprise that does not upgrade itself, it's whole business of production and operation has a very low level of knowledge, so it does not need intelligent staff, it just needs cheap workers, that sort of labor force is sufficient. Analysts say the new administration has tried to solve the problem of low wages for young workers but at the same time allows employers to take on cheap overseas Chinese community students. This does nothing to help ameliorate the domestic low-wage environment, and further squeezes employment opportunities for locals. Coupled with the fact that the overall degree of internationalization in Taiwan is low, and economic and industrial development has been stagnant for the last few years, young people can only choose to look for their opportunities abroad.
