The late Cheng Nan-jung, founder of the weekly magazine Freedom Era, first started the 228 Peace Day movement in 1987, seeking justice for the victims of the 228 incident. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the massacre, and the Cheng Nan-jung Foundation is planning a special exhibition, hoping to educate people more about that period in history and lead them to reflect on the incident.
These old pictures tell the story of the 228 Peace Day Movement in 1987. This movement was spearheaded by Cheng Nan-jung, the late founder of Freedom Era magazine.

We participated in the first event, which started with 20 or 30 people. You can look at the pictures. We must remember that Taiwan enjoys democracy today thanks to these martyrs, who paid the price in blood, sweat, tears and even broken families.
Under martial law, 228 was a forbidden topic. No one knew if the movement would succeed. Starting February 14th that year all the way to March, the movement held 20 demonstrations and talks. This was the first full-scale remembrance of 228, 40 years after the massacre.

It was in 1987, on February 14th that year, that the first talk on redress for 228 victims was held in Rixing Elementary School. It was an event held by what we would now call a civic group, the Society for 228 Peace Day. The event was a key that opened the door for the movement to bring justice to 228 victims.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the 228 Incident and the 30th anniversary of the 228 Peace Day Movement. On the eve of the anniversary, the Cheng Nan-jung Foundation is holding a special exhibition that hopes to lead more people to view the historical documents of the traumatic event, and think about the era's significance and society's responsibility. Only through continued pursuit of the truth can transitional justice be achieved.
