How to retrofit old buildings to fit modern needs / 現代建物多元需求 老校建築改造大挑戰

How to change old spaces so that they fit modern needs is a question faced by many established universities in Taiwan. Today's Vital Taiwan takes you to Taichung's Tunghai University and show you how old buildings there are retrofitted. Across Tunghai University, many buildings left from more than half a century ago still stand tall. However, not all of them suit modern needs, making their retrofitting the school's top priority, and sometimes its challenge, too. Take this 1958-built gymnasium for example, the school previously tore down a special wall dotted with regularly spaced circular holes to install of a disability-friendly elevator, causing concern among students. Similarly, many also worried that renovation at this 1962-built Art Center, would be carried out at the expense of architectural details. ==CHAO SHU-YI Architecture Student, Tunghai University== They told us that the original surface was uneven, but instead of trying to fix it, the designer simply bulldozed the whole floor. ==LUO SHI-WEI Fine Arts & Creative Design College Dean, Tunghai Uni.== Many of the metal pipes designed to contain electric wiring are now rusted. If the electricians tried to thread cables through those rusted pipes, it might damage the cable's insulation layer and lead to short circuiting. Tunghai University told us that due budget and time constraints, compromises are sometimes hard to avoid. As a result, the school has put together a special task-force to deal with relevant issues. Nevertheless, an even bigger challenge awaits old buildings in schools across Taiwan. Recently, the Ministry of Education announced that all schools would have to obtain appropriate fire and structural safety certificates for all their buildings by the end of 2017. ==TSAI YU-HUA Architecture Dept. Asst. Researcher, Ntl. Cheng Kung Uni.== In order to comply with current regulations, there needs to be an adequate fire safety zone, which would cover the entire stairwell, meaning that the space would lose much of its original charm. To protect the building, National Cheng Kung University immediately applied to list the library, built nearly 60 years ago, as a historic building in exchange for more flexibility. Similarly, Tunghai University is planning to do the same with three of its own older buildings, with a student group going as far as petitioning to list the whole campus as designated historic asset. At the moment, around 300 campus buildings in Taiwan have yet to be properly licensed. Experts believe that it takes communication and flexibility to strike a balance between aesthetics and safety.
