Yesterday Dec. 10 was World Human Rights Day. It was also the official opening of the museum dedicated to womens' rights and peace, known as the Ama Museum in Taipei's Dihua Street. Two of the surviving so-called comfort women Chen Lien-hua and Lee Rong-zhu came to the opening. The photos in the corridor are of scenes from the lives of Taiwan's 58 so-called comfort women. The hall is dedicated to an exhibition on the Japanese abuse of women in the second world war. After decades of effort, the museum dedicated to peace and womens' rights and known as the Ama Museum finally had its official opening. ==CHEN LIEN-HUA Taiwan 'comfort' woman== When I see the love all of you show, taking care of us old women, I am very thankful. 92 year old Lien-hua is one of three surviving of the 58 Taiwan 'comfort' women. even though her health is not good she still wanted to be present at the museum opening. She was held captive in Hsinchu's Airbase as a so-called comfort woman. 86 year old Korean Lee Rong-zhu also came to talk about her time held captive in Taiwan. ==LEE RONG-ZHU Korean 'comfort' woman== When I was brought here to serve, there was a 17 year old boy who was working at odd jobs in the camp, and one day he told me that the war was over and you are free, you can go home. Most of the 'comfort' women have died without ever having received an apology from the Japanese. The Taipei Women's Rescue Foundation hopes that the new government will continue to seek compensation from Japan, and that the values of the womens' stories, human rights and anti-gender violence would be passed on through the Ama Museum to the next generation.
