The US east coast saw it's first major storm of the season just two weeks before Christmas, New York City had nearly 50 centimeters of snow and the storm caused many traffic accidents on the freeways. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for the northern states and the U.S. east coast; sub-freezing temperatures are forecast for next week. The first winter storm hit the U.S. east coast. On December 9, the storm dumped 48 centimeters of snow in upstate New York. ==ADRIENNE BANKERT, ABC News reporter== With expectations it's going to get even icier over night with a deep freeze into the morning, this first major storm of the season not letting up until sometime next week. The winter storm caused several traffic accidents. One driver in New York had his car skidded into a truck and died. Over a hundred passenger cars skidded over accumulated snow, some even flipped over. ==TRUCK DRIVER== I've never put one in the ditch yet, I see these people around me, it scared me. The neighboring state of Pennsylvania had 70 cars in a chain collision while Ohio had 50 with 20 people injured, three were critically wounded; the highway was closed for at least 15 hours. On the west coast, Oregon also had a snow storm; Washington State had one school bus overturning, and thousands of households had power outage. In sum, a total of 19 states had snow storm alerts. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for the northern states and the east coast. There will be below zero Celsius degree temperatures next week.
