OPPOSITION CALLS FOR MORE DISCUSSION, DPP CARRIES ON|勞基法修法週二再闖關 勞團抗議如影隨行

Controversy hasn't settled on how many holidays taiwanese workers should get per week. On Dec. 2, the Legislative Yuan was scheduled to review proposed amendments to the labor standards act, but couldn't carry on with the process because of violence outside the legislative building. Tomorrow, the amendments will be up for review again, but labor groups have vowed to continue their protests outside the Legislative Yuan. The opposition caucus called on the ruling Democratic Progressive Party to hold more wide ranging discussions first. The DPP caucus responded that it will follow legislative procedure. The controversial amendments on holidays to the labor law failed to be reviewed last week in the Legislative Yuan due to protests by labor groups and the opposition. On Dec. 6, they are set to be reviewed again. The Kuomintang caucus and New Power Party caucus called on the ruling DPP not to be so hasty in pushing the amendments through so as to allow more time for wider discussion. ==WANG YU-MIN KMT caucus convener== Discontented labor groups are still making themselves heard, and the business and industry groups are also unhappy with the DPP pushing to get their new version of the amendments on holidays through quickly, so we think that it would be better if there were more time for discussion with all these groups and the DPP could come to a better version. ==HSU YUNG-MING New Power Party caucus convener== This legislation is decided jointly by 113 legislators. I think a broader attitude should be taken and not stick to a rigid directive so it becomes an emotional dispute or a retaliatory piece of legislation, we must be careful to avoid this on Tuesday. A hunger strike by labor groups continues outside the Legislative Yuan and police have been on guard all around there for four weeks. Labor groups says they will continue to protest at the site on Dec. 6. ==LU CHI-HUNG labor activist== The DPP wants to use this version of special holidays in exchange to cutting seven days national holiday. We cannot accept this, so we will continue our protests outside the Legislative Yuan to put pressure on them. Despite the voices of dissent and calls for further discussion, the DPP caucus says it will follow normal procedure. ==HUANG WEI-CHIH DPP caucus convener== Basically we will go ahead according to normal procedure clause by clause, there isn't a timetable, but there is a set procedure. First we discuss the overall legislation, then take the second reading, one by one. During media interviews, DPP caucus convener Ker Chien-ming said he would discuss issues with the opposition on Dec. 5.
