20,000 SUPPORTERS GATHER OUTSIDE PUBLIC HEARING|同性婚公聽會外 挺同反同群眾相互喊話

發布時間: 更新時間:
The second hearing on same sex marriage was held yesterday at the legislative yuan, where more than 20 thousand people for gay marriage gathered to show their support and called for the DPP to keep its campaign promises. At the same time, the opposition camp also gathered for a protest. The support camp is calling for more people to show up on the streets on December 10th, which is the global Human Rights Day. Shouting catchy slogans and armed with colorful flags and banners, people who support amending the civil codes to allow marriage for all gathered on Nov. 2 outside the Legislative Yuan, where the second hearing on same sex marriage was held. ==PENG CHIH-LIU, Dir., Taiwan LGBT Hotline Association== Amending the civil codes is a way for the state to officially recognize us. It is also a way to show our children that Taiwan is a country where people all sexualitlies are accepted and welcomed. ==MIAO PO-YA, Nat. Rep., Social Democratic Party == If we legalize same sex marriage by enacting a special law, that would be giving discriminatory treatment to people who should be treated just like everyone else, which is against the Constitution. While many people within the LGBT community were moved to tears, opponents of same sex marriage held their own rally less than a block away. They claim to respect the basic rights of non-heterosexuals, yet they are adamantly against amending the civil codes and they disapprove the idea of gay adoption. ==MR. TSAI, opponent same sex marriage== I don't think an amendment is a good idea. Because if you allow this amendment, there will be more amendments to come. I've heard that there are hundreds of amendments down the pipe. That's just too complicated. What a waste of public resource. ==WENG LI-YEN opponent, same sex marriage== A child should be raised by one father and one mother. The father has to be a man and the mother has to be a woman. That's what I call a balanced family. For now, a consensus seems hard to reach. Both camps have announced to take to take to the streets in front of the Presidential Office in December. Meanwhile, the battle for marriage equality in Taiwan continues.
