France will hold its presidential election next year. And much attention lately has been put on who will represent France's political right. In Sunday's primary run-off vote, François Fillon of the conservative Republican Party handsomely defeated rival Alain Juppé. Fillon will be the country's right wing presidential candidate next year.
Francois Fillon, a conservative former prime minister, won around 69 percent of the vote compared to 31 percent for Alain Juppé, also a former Prime Minister. Just like the far-right Le Pen, Fillon promotes a hardline on political or totalitarian Islam in France. He has said he is in favour of an outright ban on the "burkini", the swimwear which caused such an uproar in the summer. This seems to be in tune with many voters in his party.

I would like France to awaken, for the future generations. Because right now we are not doing so well.
Fillon also wants to strip jihadists of their French nationality, another policy of Le Pen's party.

We need to mobilise in order to keep our social system as it used to be.
Fillon is socially conservative and a practising Catholic, who voted against gay marriage when it was introduced by Socialist President Francois Hollande and has said he wants to amend the 2013 law. He has been in politics for around 40 years and like Le Pen also favours maintaining close ties with Vladimir Putin's Russia. After winning Sunday's rightwing primary runoff vote, Francois Fillon's next challenge will be to take on Marine Le Pen in next year's presidential elections.
