OPPOSITION TO SAME-SEX MARRIAGE LAW AS DISCRIMINATORY|同性婚擬立專法 600位律師連署反對

The Ministry of Justice and the two major political parties are to propose a special law for same-sex marriage. However, six hundred lawyers are opposed to the idea. Holding up "Lawyers For Marriage Equality" signs at the Legislative Yuan, these lawyers oppose legislators to proposing a special law for same-sex marriage, because that would become an extension of social discrimination and injustice, segregating gay and lesbian couples from same-sex marriage. ==LU SHIH-WEI Lawyer== We are not demanding for privileges, we're requesting the rights to be treated equally. It's a request for very basic fundamental rights. They are blaming at DPP's chief legislation coordinator Ker Chien-ming, Ker made a post at his facebook page saying that DPP is in favor of proposing a special law for legalizing same-sex marriage. Such statement frustrated gay rights organizations. Basically they are trying to segregate gay couples from heterosexual marriage. Gay rights groups emphasized the only difference was the natural birth of child. However, there are groups support proposing a special law. ==CHANG SHOU-I Protect Families Alliance Secretary-General== We oppose an amendment to the Civil Code Article 972. The other issues are easier for us to discuss. Gays and lesbians are asking for rights protection, we have never opposed to that. We never said nor opposed them having rights protection. Therefore, if there is a special law which protects their rights, then we are happy to see it happens. Amending the civil codes is complicated, but passing a special law involves fears of discrimination. Which option may be better continues controversy in public discussion.
