JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS ARE SLEEP-DEPRIVED AND OVERWORKED |國中生教育現況 睡不飽.壓力大.過勞

November 20th was the International Children's Rights Day. According to a survey done by the Humanistic Education Foundation. In Taiwan, over half of the students in junior high school spend more than 10 hours at school each day, and more than one-fourth of them have to face exams every morning. Which means, most of the students are sleep-deprived due to an overload of school work and many experience tremendous pressure from school. The seventh grader Chang lives under pressurized daily life after entering junior high school. He used to sleep at 9:30pm when he was an elementary school student. Now he cannot go to bed until 11pm. ==CHANG CHEN-KAI, Seventh Grader== Every teacher assigns homework, seven classes a day have a pile of homework to study and complete. You have to carry all of them home and finish them one by one. According to a survey done by the Humanistic Education Foundation, over half of the junior high school students surveyed, they stay at school for over ten hours each day. More than 80% need to attend the eighth period; 60% need to be at school before 7:30AM, and 25% of students have exams for their morning self-study sessions. The Foundation had pointed out that Taiwan's junior high school education system has violated the "Convention on the Rights of the Child" proclaimed by the United Nations. ==HSIEH SHU-MEI, Humanistic Education Foundation Deputy Exe. Manager== Not only depriving child's break time, it's equivalent to deciding his own time management. It infringes the rights for students to make their own decisions. The system violates the Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child The Foundation said the current junior high school education system has made students overly strained. Also, nearly 70% of junior high schools enforce hair code policy which also violates children's rights.
