NTU PRESIDENT CLARIFIES PAPER FRAUD ALLEGATION|4論文被質疑 楊泮池:3篇已勘誤.1篇檢視中

National Taiwan University President Yang Pan-chyr made a public statement on Nov. 19th to clarify accusations of falsified papers. He said that three of the four papers in question have been verified as nonfraudulent. The last one is still under examination. He admitted that this is the greatest crisis of his academic career. National Taiwan University has set up a special committee and will complete its review of this case by the end of December. Media has reported numerous fraudulent paper scandals. Some scholars believe that many university professors struggle with publishing more papers in order to get promotions or pass the evaluation. As result, the quality of the papers is compromised. This is an issue that needs to be reviewed comprehensively. NTU President Yang Pan-chyr was accused of being involved in several academic fraud allegations. In a public statement, he said that the problem was mostly due to misprinted graphs. Three of the papers have been confirmed to be authentic. The last one is still under review. ==YANG PAN-CHYR, NTU President== There are several co-authors. Of course, each author will only look at their own charts, so they may not necessarily be able to spot a problem. Now we have more advanced software to avoid this problem. (So in the past, it was harder to spot the problem?) You may not be able to see the problem by just looking at the graphs. Former NTU biochemistry professor Kuo Min-liang was accused of faking graphs and pictures in his papers, and President Yang Pan-Chyr became involved because he was also listed as a co-author. Yang explained that he only provided research materials for the paper, and now his academic career is in crisis. ==LIN DA-DER, NTU Secretary-general== NTU set up a special committee with five outside experts and two NTU scholars. They are conducting a formal review of this case. In 2014, former Minister of Education Chiang Wei-ling was accused of plagiarism for a paper he co-authored with a student and had to step down as a result of the scandal. Some scholars pointed out that in recent years, young professors have to churn out papers in order to be promoted or pass the evaluation. Many senior professors may be co-authors by name only and fail to check the quality of the papers. ==LIN YI-BING, Former MOST Deputy Minister== Professors should not always judge their prestige by the quantities of papers. There are many indicators of a scholar's influence. Nobel laureates can win the award with just one or two important papers. That's why we need to change this mindset of focusing on the quantities of published papers. The Ministry of Education has also launched a review of the evaluation system for professors. In response to the incident, NTU said the special committee will announce the results of their review by the end of December.
