Sharbat Gula, who is known as "the Afghan girl" who became an icon for her piercing green eyes in an image captured on the cover of the National Geographic magazine, was arrested last week by the Pakistani authorities for using fake identity documents. On Nov 4, the Pakistani court ordered her to be deported back to her war-torn homeland that she escaped from 30 years ago. 31 years ago, Sharbat Gula, the green-eyed Afghan girl with a haunting gaze was the face on the cover of National Geographic. On Nov 4, accompanied by her lawyer, she appeared in burqa at the court in Peshawar, Pakistan for her sentencing. Thus, she was given a lenient sentence of 15 days of imprisonment and a fine of 110,000 rupees. Since Gula has been in prison for 13 days, she will be released next Monday, on Nov 7. An official of the Afghan consulate in Peshawar paid her fines for her and said that they will bring Gula and her family back to Afghanistan with dignity. Gula left her homeland 30 years ago to escape the cruelties of war. According to Pakistani authorities, Gula obtained a forged ID in Peshawar 2 years ago. There are over 2.5 million Afghan refugees like her who entered Pakistan without legal documents. Due to a change in the Pakistani foreign policy, they now all face deportation.
