The European Parliament announced on October 27th that the 2016 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded to two Yazidi young women, Nadia Murad Basee Taha and Lamiya Aji Bashar, who escaped sexual enslavement by the Islamic State and have been working tirelessly to advocate for their people. The award embodies the EU's support for Middle Eastern refugees. ==NADIA MURAD BASEE TAHA, Yazidi refugee== If decapitations, sexual enslavement, and child rape cannot drive you to action, how long will you wait? Not just your families deserve to live a good life, we also deserve to live our lives. Yazidi girl Nadia Murad Basee Taha spoke at the UN general assembly in September as a goodwill ambassador and pleaded the international community to focus on the predicament of Middle Eastern refugees, particularly, the atrocities suffered by the Yazidis at the hands of the Islamic State. In Aug. 2012, the IS took over much of northern Iraq. As a result, the local Kurdish Yazidis who have lived there for generations were forced to leave their homeland in escape. Those who stayed were killed. Over 10,000 women were abducted for sexual enslavement, including Nadia and Lamiya, who were 19 and 16 at the time. Both of them escaped a life in hell and have since become human rights activists for refugees. ==MARTIN SCHULZ, European Parliament President== Today, they both speak for the victims of sexual violence against the organized enslavement by the ISIL. Nadia Murad Basee Taha and Lamiya Aji Bashar were nominated by the European parliament's liberal ALDE group for the courage they demonstrated in the face of brutality and terrorism. They are an inspiration for women who suffer from oppression and persecution. Their compatriots back in northern Iraq also hope that the award can help raise awareness for the plight of the Yazidi people.
