Chinese group tourists to Hengchun penisula decrease by 50% /十一黃金週 恆春陸客團較去年減5成　　　　　　　　　　

Ever since President Tsai Ing-wen took office, the number of Chinese tourists has largely decreased. The amount of Chinese tourists was expected to rise up with the China's 7-day national holiday, Golden day which started on October 1. However, the number of tourists visiting Hengchung peninsula and Kenting is still 50 % less than what it was in the previous year. The parking lot and hotel lobby were empty during the weekend and holidays. It was the second day of the first weekend in October. However, this hotel did not have one single Chinese tourist. ==HOTEL OWNER== This is the first long weekend in October, but not even a tour bus came here. Last year when the number of Chinese tourists reached its highest point, this restaurant was full of Chinese customers at lunch time. But now, half of tables and chairs are empty, with only one Chinese tour group. ==RESTAURANT OWNER== There were typhoons and Taiwan's economy is weak, so consumer spending is low. Generally speaking, there is nearly 50% less business this summer compared with two years ago. Half of the 30 employees have been laid off, the remaining workers are getting paid just 60% of their salary. ==WU HSUAN-TUNG, DG, Tourism Industry League, Hengchun Peninsula== For October's first long weekend, I feel there are fewer Chinese tourists walking along Kenting's main street. There are less than before. The number of group tours decreased by at least half, maybe less than 50%. The number of individual travelers is approximately 20% less. The league stated that Chinese tourist numbers have dropped to less than half previous rates. However, some businesses suggest the industry should aim at Taiwan travel, domestic visitors with discount cards, because it's still a good market.
