The sixth board of the Public Television System Foundation will convene today to elect its chairman. Yesterday, 8 new board directors, including former Ministry of Culture official Chen Yu-xiu, and the chief executive of the Foundation for Excellent Journalism Award, Eve Chiu, spoke about their visions for the PTS Foundation at a press event. The 6th PTS Foundation chairman will be elected on Sep. 26. The Taiwan Media Watch Foundation invited the newly appointed PTS directors to talk about their vision for the Taiwan Public Television Service. ==EVE CHIU, Foundation for Excellent Journalism Award CEO== Structural issues have caused the entire TV culture to sink, TV content now lags behind Taiwan society. We need segmentation. We can have channels dedicated to news, documentary, art, music, diverse culture, children, and public service for people with disabilities. We can do all that. Chiu elaborated on the idea of a large PTS. She envisions the PTS to be the leader of the television industry, cultivating new talent and ensuring the flow of resources. She also hopes the PTS programs can be more segmented to demonstrate the diverse culture of Taiwan. Another PTS director, Chen Yu-xiu, agreed. She also proposed revisions on laws and funding sources. ==CHEN YU-XIU, Egret Fund chairperson== I hope that PTS can be the spokesperson for Taiwan. We need to review the laws and realign our goals. We have to adapt and change with the times. The government can guide us with its policies in terms of budget allocation. Some PTS directors believe that TV is part of popular culture and should be geared towards the public's preferences instead of serving specific groups. ==CHENG TZU-LEONG, Prof. of National Chengchi University== We need to serve the public and the entire communications industry. PTS programs should allow independent production companies to participate so that the entire TV industry can grow in Taiwan, not just the PTS. Some new directors suggested allocating more budget for digital media. Others hoped to include more divergent voices from different groups in Taiwan. TRANSLATED BY:CHRISTINA LIU
