Manjhou: No electricity, water, petrol, or mobile access / 恆春半島停電戶多 台電動員人力搶修　　　　　　　　　　

After Typhoon Meranti struck Pingtung, there were still 17,000 households without electricity yesterday. The majority were in the Hengchun Peninsula. Taipower mobilized a large number of staff to make repairs. Local residents were busy cleaning up, but without either power or running water, it was hard. Some have not had running water for a week. Yesterday military personnel brought their own field equipment to Manjhou Township, providing shower tents for residents in remote villages who had not had a hot shower for a week. Military personnel brought three lots of shower equipment and set them up in Pingtung's Manjhou Township, so that residents could finally enjoy a hot shower. ==RESIDENT Manjhou Township Changrong Village== So how long since you had a shower? Uh, one week. How does it feel? Not bad, not bad! As the water pipes in the mountain were damaged, it was a week since the residents had had running water and they all hurried to take advantage of the showers. Added to this there are still over 200 households, half of those in Manjhou, still without electricity. ==YU TSENG-CHUN Manjhou Township Chief== Only three villages have electricity, Manjhou, Yongching and Gangkou, the other five villages don't have any. In Hengchun and Checheng there are also households without electricity. In the evening, residents have to rely on torches and candles. Their fridges are all empty and the food thrown away, their houses are damaged and life is really inconvenient. ==RESIDENT== Where the wood is eroded we worry about the tiles falling through, especially at night, we worry when it rains and it drips through. How can we live? ==RESIDENT== It's really hot, we don't dare to go inside and sleep, we just sit here late into the night. Typhoon Meranti blew down 400 electricity poles, cutting electricity for thousands, most of these were in Pingtung. Taipower hoped to have power back for the majority of households by dusk on Sept. 19 and to this end it mobilized around 600 staff to continue repairs overnight, getting emergency reinforcements of engineering staff from central Taiwan. ==TAIPOWER ENGINEER== Sometimes we see the lights come on gradually, however much we can do, we do, to help this place. As well as lacking electricity and water, internet and mobile access in Manjhou are intermittent and the only petrol station is temporarily closed, having been damaged by the typhoon.
