TYPHOON MERANTI SLAMS SOUTHEAST CHINA KILLS 13|莫蘭蒂重創中國東南沿海 13死.14失蹤

Typhoon Meranti slammed the southeast China. In Fujian and Zhejiang, 13 people are dead, and 14 are still missing. With over 10,000 houses destroyed and a million people affected, the loss was near RMB$3 billion. As people brace themselves for another approaching typhoon, Malakas, the region may suffer even more damage. The 14th typhoon this year, Meranti, wreaked havoc in Xiamen, Fujian Province. 350,000 street trees were knocked over, and over 200 roads were flooded. The signboard of Xiamen University was damaged, and the flood waters reached a meter high on campus. Water and electricity have also been cut. Many buildings had broken windows. Even a large commercial jet was toppled by strong winds. In Zhejiang Province, torrential rain caused the city to be flooded by sea water. Three bridges that are over 500 years old and classified as national monument were swept away by the flood, too. Houses were submerged in the mudslide. On the morning of Sep. 16th, a family of nine, including children and a pregnant woman, were trapped by the flood and rescued by the police and firefighters. Over 10,000 houses were destroyed and over 1 million people affected. The economic loss amounted to almost RMB$ 3 billion.
