PRESIDENT TSAI GOES SOUTH TO SEE TYPHOON DAMAGE|屏東羌園水深及腰.停水電 總統南下勘災

Typhoon Meranti left in its wake a trail of damage in Pingtung County, with severe flooding in Fanliao and Jia Dong Township. In Jia Dong , floodwaters in Chiang Yuan Village was waist-deep at one point, and local residents were left without water or electricity. The county government said the floodwaters would recede by the evening of Sep. 15. Rescuers had to use rubber boats to transport supplies to residents. The elderly couple waded slowly through the muddy water. The have lost all their crops in the flood, and their home is now soaked in water. Some people packed up their bags and planned to stay with their relatives. In the Chiang Yuan Village of Jia Dong Township, torrential rains, high tide, and seawater intrusion combined have caused over 100 households in 3 villages to be stranded by the flood for 2 days. ==LOCAL RESIDENT== It's a problem. I cannot sleep at night. (Why?) I worry about the flood and the wind. (And your house?) My house is flooded. ==Local resident== I packed up some clothes. I'm going to stay with my relatives. (Why?) I need to wait for water to recede to start cleaning. This house is not livable right now. Local residents have been stranded, and water and electricity outage exacerbated the situation. The county government and the military used rubber boats to transport supplies to residents. A child who has been sick for two days was evacuated in an armored car. President Tsai Ing-wen visited Pingtung to inspect the affected areas.
