The 2023 Taiwan Lantern Festival "Light Up the Future" was held in Taipei, and it was the first international event after the COVID restrictions were lifted. More than 12 million people attended the festival. The light artworks exhibited in the show, were made by many outstanding artists from home and abroad. Among them, the work "Sailing Castle Ren'ai," which was located in "the Beacons of Light Display Zone" in the East District commercial area, was made by Taiwan artist Feng Cheng-tsung.
"Sailing Castle Ren'ai" was a large-scale architectural imaginary work built with woods, iron, and steel cables, and was displayed in Dunren Park, Ren'ai borough. The structure with sails was to interpret the urban landscape, creating a landmark for local people, and a place where old and new memories of the city overlap. The first work of the series "Sailing Castle" was displayed at the 2019 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Pingtung, which has won the Red Dot Design Award. In 2021, Feng launched the "Sailing Castle Fuzhong" outside the MRT Fuzhong Station Entrance Exit 3, which was also impressed by local residents.
Feng Cheng-tsung, born in 1987, his artworks are well-known for combining traditional craftsmanship with modern art designs. He has collaborated with many big brands such as Hermès, Nike, Apple, and Eslite. Feng is famous for his reinterpretation of traditional bamboo craftsmanship. His projects are often a culmination of various ancient wisdom and artisanal knowledge of experts in different fields. One of his most recent work "Fish Trap House VII" was built in New York in 2022, marking him as the first Taiwanese artist to exhibit artwork at the LongHouse Reserve. Before he came up with this design, Feng learned the traditional making methods for bamboo fish traps used by the indigenous Thao tribe. The fish trap house became a series of installations around the world, rather than capturing fish, it captures people's attention.
