The military will begin holding actual combat-based shooting drills this year in light of international military conflicts such as the Ukraine-Russia war and after one year of planning and verification. Soldiers will be required to shoot 36 times in one minute and 45 seconds from three positions.
The signal sounds, and the soldiers run forward with their rifles. They take cover using oil barrels as they charge forward to their shooting positions. When they are 75 meters from their targets, they prepare to shoot.
In this drill, soldiers switch between the three firing positions of prone, kneeling, and standing. The targets have three patterns. The training also includes dealing with jammed bullets to test field reactions. This training drill that is based on real combat is the military's newest shooting drill. Soldiers need to shoot 36 bullets in one minute and 45 seconds.
Chang Chia-hua, Army Major, Infantry Training Headquarters, MND: “The number of instructors in all units is still insufficient, and we continue to strengthen the training. (Will this be used for the one-year compulsory service next year?) Yes, right now the training includes switching between different targets, firing positions, and using obstacles.”
The military decided to implement this plan in light of international military conflicts such as the Ukraine-Russia war. It spent one year planning, adjusting, and verifying this plan, and it will be implemented this year in all troops. The drill will test soldiers' cardiopulmonary function and shooting stability. This drill will improve the military's self-defense capabilities. Soldiers must first become proficient in basic shooting in a prone position from 175 meters. The requirement for conscripts serving four months is nine out of 18 bullets hitting the target, and 20 out of 30 for standing and reserve troops. Those in armored units, artillery units, and combat support units can only progress to training in the three firing positions after completing the previous training.
Tang Yu-fu, Army Sergeant, 5th Barrack, 21th Artillery Headquarters: “You have to learn how to rapidly control your breathing after you finish sprinting or moving quickly, otherwise you won't be stable when you fire and you'll miss the target.”
The military said the drill would be included in the training for conscripts serving one year. It is currently training seed instructors so that every unit will be familiar with the firing positions and know how to adapt to different combat environments.
