New Cabinet Takes Over From Old One

New Premier Chen Chien-jen got to work on Jan. 31. He said this position will be his last as a civil servant and he will do his best. Meanwhile, outgoing Premier Su Tseng-chang said he's not planning on retiring because service is his career.

Su Tseng-chang, Former Premier: “Brother Chien-jen, you've always been so unhurried and graceful. I want to tell you the hard times are now only just beginning.”

The new Cabinet took over from the old one on Jan. 31. Outgoing Premier Su Tseng-chang handed the baton to incoming Premier Chen Chien-jen with Vice President William Lai serving as the witness. When asked about his next move, Su said he doesn't plan to retire and he has many things to do. He also said he's available to serve as his daughter's driver.

Su Tseng-chang, Former Premier: “What I want to say is that although my strength is small, the country can count on me if it needs me.”

William Lai, Vice President: “Premier Su has stepped down today after completing his mission. I want to tell Premier Su thank you, and also that you worked hard.”

Chen said he felt much more relaxed when he served as the witness four years ago, and he's undertaking a heavy responsibility. He cited a verse from the Bible about being "servant of all." He also said that although everyone has different beliefs, serving the people is a common belief, and that the position of premier will be his last as a civil servant.

Chen Chien-jen, Premier: “This position will be my last as a civil servant. I only have one conviction about this great responsibility that I'm about to take on, which is that I will do my best.”

The new Cabinet saw Su off and then got to work. The new Cabinet has more female members as well as more former mayors and magistrates. The latter category includes Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan and Interior Minister Lin Yu-chang. Chen reminded his team that there is no time to squander this year.
