TSMC's 7-nanometer Factory in Kaohsiung Adjusted?

It is believed that TSMC is planning to spend another US$12 billion to build another fabrication plant in Arizona, adjacent to the factory under construction. The second plant is expected to manufacture cutting edge next-generation 3nm chips. TSMC said it has not yet finalized plans.

TSMC is rumored to invest a further US$12 billion to expand production capacity at its 3-nanometer fab in the U.S. Domestic analysts are worried whether Taiwan's semiconductor core technology will be transferred because of this.

Wu Ming-hui, Director, Economic Development Dept., National Development Council: “We are not worried about this. Because the entire supply chain's resilience depends on a company having multinational production bases. We respect they have to diversify some of their investment activities. I don't think this will have an impact on Taiwan's competitiveness as a whole.”

TSMC responded that part of its Arizona wafer fab may be used in the second phase, allowing the company to maintain expansion flexibility, but it has not yet determined the second phase of the U.S. wafer fab. Compared with the rumors of factory expansion in the U.S., the company's 7-nanometer factory in Kaohsiung has been suspended due to the sudden drop in customer orders. The Kaohsiung City Economic Development Bureau stated that the current plans for the two fabs in Nanzi Industrial Park have not changed. According to external analysts, the progress of TSMC's U.S. and Taiwan factory construction has been unsteady. The planning process may be related to diversifying risks.

Wang Jung-hsu, CEO, Marbo Investment Advisors: “TSMC may be diversifying geopolitical risk. News of TSMC setting up factories in foreign countries did not have a negative impact on its share price.”

An analyst said that TSMC's share price on the 10th was affected by the sharp fall in U.S. stocks on the 9th. Its share fell to NT$406 during the session. The upcoming U.S. CPI announcement also affected U.S. and Taiwanese stocks.
