Xi Gives Speech at 20th Party Congress

During his speech at China's 20th Party Congress, Xi Jinping reasserted China's opposition to Taiwan independence and outside interference and said China would not rule out the use of force. One observer in Taiwan says the 20th Party Congress was the most important congress since the 11th National Congress.

Ming Ju-zheng, NTU Political Science Professor: “(Xi) reaffirmed "one country, two systems" and the push for reunification. A journalist just asked me about what he said about not ruling out the use of force. I said it doesn't mean much. They've been saying that for decades, and have consistently said that the force wouldn't be used on the people of Taiwan, but rather on foreign interveners.”

One observer says Xi Jinping's report focused less on reform and economic development this year, and the remarks on "one country, two systems," reunification and not ruling out the use of force against outside interlopers were nothing new.
