At 7:09 am on June 10, a fire broke out at the Taichung Power Plant, which was brought under control in two hours. Taipower said no one was injured and power supplies remain stable.
Thick black smoke soared to the sky and can be seen from the Dadu Mountain located several kilometers away. At 7 am on June 10, a fire broke out at the Taichung Power Plant. Personnel from four fire brigades were dispatched to bring the fire under control by 9 am. Many are will worried if the power supply would be affected. In response, Taipower said the fire did not affect the coal bunker and the generators.
On the whole, three conveyer belts for transporting the coals have been damaged, however, this will not affect the plant's ability to supply electricity.
According to Taipower, the fire started at its coal transfer tower TR-62. The coal bunker and the generators remain intact. Currently, there are still enough coal reserve for 15 days of electricity. The damaged coal conveyer belt could be temporarily replaced by land transport, therefore the plant's operation and its power supply won't be affected. The Taichung Environmental Protection Bureau is also monitoring the air quality at the scene as the dense smoke from the fire might have affected the air quality in the nearby region.
The wind is blowing north north east today, which means the affected areas might be the regions between Taichung and Changhua. Taichung city government has informed Changhua on the fire through our Governance Platform for the 7 Central cities and counties.
