A nurse was sent into the Intensive Care Unit following the vaccination. Health officials said it's an independent case and there are no problems with the safety of the AZ vaccine.
A registered nurse in her forties at the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital is reportedly to exhibit acute allergic reaction following the inoculation of the AstraZeneca vaccine on the fourth day of the vaccination rollout. On the morning of March 24, the nurse was given the shot and experienced heart palpitation and rash five minutes later. She did not go into shock with her blood pressure maintaining at 170 mmHg. The patient was given steroid and antihistamine to treat the reaction in the 30 minutes of observation period. To be more cautious, the patient was later admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close observation for one day. The nurse was discharged on the morning of March 25.
The registered nurse suffered some acute allergic to the vaccine. The hospital, for caution's sake placed her in the ICU for observation. Her vital signs were stable during the period which led us to conclude that it was not a severe allergic reaction to the jab.
According to the Central Epidemic Command Center, up until the evening of the 24, a total of 4,000 medical workers have been inoculated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, and seven of them have reported mild adverse reaction to the jab, with one nurse exhibiting acute allergic reactions.
The Deputy Minister said reactions to vaccines vary from person to person and that only one out of the 4,000 vaccinated has shown such allergic reaction. The vaccine itself is safe. Fourteen more hospitals across the national are to be added to the original list of 58 designated health care centers for the rollout of the vaccination program.
The body might have existing antibodies which recognize this antigen, and thus the immune system made a rapid response. Acute allergic reactions can happen in an instant. A foreign case study has shown that people who showed adverse allergic reaction to vaccines or people who have severe allergy histories are more likely to exhibit allergic reactions post-vaccination. But this is the only case study I can find right now.
Dr. Huang said the human bodies have different reactions to vaccines with some experiencing stronger adverse reactions than others post-vaccination. According to an international observatory data agency, the possibility of anaphylaxis occurring following the inoculation of the Oxford-AztraZeneca vaccine is approximately 1 in 100,000. Countries in Asia have just begun the implementation of the AZ vaccines. It is yet to be observed whether Asians are more susceptible to acute allergic reaction to this specific jab.
