The US House Republicans' China Task Force has released a report, laying out over 400 policy recommendations to combat threats from China. Some of them mention Taiwan. For example, one calls for trade talks between Taiwan and the US. Meanwhile, US ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft has proposed allowing Taiwan to participate in the UN system.
The US House Republicans' China Task Force released a China threat report on the eve of China's National Day. The report, which took the group months to put together, detailed 82 "discoveries," 400-plus policy recommendations, and close to 200 legislative recommendations. There is bipartisan agreement on two-thirds of the content.
…to supporting the protestors in Hong Kong and the threatened countries like Taiwan…the Chinese Communist Party is the greatest long-term threat to the interests of the United States of America.
Apart from a slew of anti-China measures, including economic and industrial espionage sanctions against China Telecommunications Corp., the report called for trade talks between the US and Taiwan. The head of the task force, Michael McCaul, says the Trump administration is already considering a trade agreement on many fronts. The report also recommended allowing Taiwan to call its stateside representative office "Taiwan Representative Office." Taipei's representative to the US, Hsiao Bi-khim, says this name would be a more accurate reflection of the status quo.
As Taiwan's first woman president, President Tsai Ing-wen knows this very well. Over the past years, she has made it a priority to tackle the issues that prevented women from entering the workplace.
Hsiao has been busy making public statements since being appointed representative. During an online women's leadership conference on the 30th, Hsiao spoke with US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Kelley Currie and called on the United Nations to accept Taiwan's participation. US ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft, meanwhile, tweeted, "The world needs Taiwan's full participation at the UN, particularly with respect to matters which affect public health and economic development. It is a force for good, and a UN without Taiwan's full participation is cheating the world." The photo Craft posted accompanying the tweet had a stuffed Formosan black bear toy in the background.
