So what happens if you happen to be one of the recipients of these Chinese-made masks? According to The Ministry of Health and Welfare, pharmacies will begin accepting and processing returns as of Sept. 4.
We will accept returns of all masks like this one that says "Carry Mask." As we haven't yet received our next mask delivery, we will ask you all to leave your contact information.
Many people who were given "Carry Mask" masks through the name-based mask distribution system headed to pharmacies on Sept. 4 to get refunds after it was discovered that the company, a member of the "National Face Mask Team," had imported masks from China and sold them as its own products. "Carry Mask" primarily served the New Taipei City area. One person had recently picked up masks for six family members, and half of them were made by "Carry Mask."
You can get masks once every two weeks. I got them for six family members, and three of them were given those masks.
I didn't know until people sent me LINE messages. (Did you wear them?) I wore one.
Consumer protection officers and health authorities carried out joint inspections during the morning to ascertain mask reserves at New Taipei City pharmacies. The first inspection was carried out at a Xinzhuang District pharmacy, and the pharmacist said all the masks received this week for the name-based mask distribution system came from "Carry Mask." She saw the news on Sept. 3, and immediately set the masks aside to allow the government to deal with them.
I'm not distributing them today, and maybe we have to wait until the postal carriers return the delivery.
Of course, this doesn't mean that 100 percent of the "Carry Mask" masks are made in China. However, people have already lost confidence and we are in contact with the company. We are also studying more convenient ways to allow people to get refunds.
There are presently around 1,000 pharmacies in New Taipei City that are part of the name-based mask distribution system. The Taiwan Pharmacist Association sent out an internal memo asking all pharmacies that are part of the system to accept returns.
You don't have to go to the pharmacy where you got your name-based masks. You can go to any one that is part of the system and they will accept returns of masks. For example, this morning we handled returns for masks made by that company that were not distributed by our pharmacy.
"Carry Mask" said masks embossed with larger letters are made in Taiwan, while the ones with smaller letters are made in China. The association says this has yet to be confirmed. Any mask embossed with "Carry Mask" and collected through the real-name mask distribution system can be returned.
