Medical personnel line the driveway of Taipei Veterans General Hospital to say goodbye to former President Lee Teng-hui, who died at the hospital on July 30. At 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 14, a motorcade transported his coffin to Chi-Nan Presbyterian Church for a memorial service.
I want to thank former President Lee and his family for their confidence in Taipei Veterans General Hospital. I believe former President Lee has already become a thousand wisps of wind freely soaring in the vast sky, though he will continue to care about us, and care about Taiwan.
The motorcade had a police escort, and arrived at the church around 7 a.m. Only family members and close friends were invited to the memorial service. Lee's granddaughter and her husband wore black. The service began at 10 a.m.
The church commemorated Lee with a 21 bell salute. Meanwhile, Taiwan Solidarity Union found 30 members of the public and students from Lee Teng-hui School to pay their respects at the entrance while holding Lee dolls. They said they hoped Lee would turn into a thousand winds and continue to protect Taiwan.
The bushido spirit is not being afraid to suffer in order to achieve your objective. We will continue to uphold this spirit of the former president, and we hope he can guide us even though his body is already not of this world because his spirit remains with us.
The service concluded at 11 a.m. The motorcade departed from the church, and detoured around the Presidential Office while watched by Presidential Office Secretary-General David Lee, Vice Secretary-General Lee Chun-yi, National Security Council Secretary-General Wellington Koo, and other staff.
Lee's remains were then cremated, and his family members were expected to bring the urn back to his residence, with a burial scheduled for later.
