The tropical storm Mekkhala is forming at about 8 am on Aug. 10. Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau has issued both the sea and land warning at 10:30 am. The central and southern regions of Taiwan started seeing rains by the evening.
A tropical depression over the waters 490 kilometers away from Taiwan's south-southwest point Cape Eluanbi was upgraded to tropical storm Mekkhala by 8 a.m. on Aug. 10 . And it's approaching the median line of the Taiwan Strait at a velocity of 22 km/h. Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau issued both the sea and land warning at 10:30 am.
As the tropical storm gradually approaches (Taiwan), southern and southeastern regions of Taiwan will see rains by tonight or tomorrow morning. Central regions, as well as offshore Penghu and Kinmen Islands will see short bursts of storms or thunderstorms as well. Other regions in Taiwan could also see regional rains. Penghu is the first region to receive a land warning.
The Central Weather Bureau said that the effect of the tropical storm will be the most evident by the morning of Tuesday, August 11, and Taiwan's offshore Penghu Island has received a land warning.
The weather bureau also announced the formation of the tropical storm ahead of its counterpart in Japan. Meteorologist Peng Chi-ming said that announcing the formation as soon as its effect is confirmed is the right way to go. He also said that Mekkhala could move west later on and reach China's Fujian province by Tuesday.
(The typhoon) is moving very quickly, and it could be very close to Taiwan by tonight. And by tomorrow morning or noon, it could reach Fujian, China. It's worth noting that the typhoon carries much humidity on the southeast portion, therefore it could bring significant rainfall to the western and southern regions of Taiwan by tomorrow morning.
The weather company believes that the effect of Mekkhala could continue through the second half of Tuesday. However, due to the heavy humidity in the southeastern portion of the typhoon, it could bring heavy rains in the central and southern regions of Taiwan and the unstable weather could continue through Wednesday, August 12.
