As the nominee Chen Chu is the former mayor of Kaohsiung City, the battle fire spread to Kaohsiung on the morning of June 29. The Kuomintang caucus of the Kaohsiung City Council called a press conference to express their support for the occupation, and the three candidates running in the Kaohsiung City mayoral by-election all expressed their opinions on the matter. The KMT's Li Mei-jheng dismissed speculation that the KMT's strong opposition to Chen's nomination was an election tactic to gather support for her.


President Tsai Ing-wen's decision to nominate Chen Chu as Control Yuan president has been controversial to say the least. Kaohsiung City Mayor by-election candidate Li Mei-jhen said while canvassing on the 29th that nominating Chen for the post was akin to appointing her "chief cook and bottle washer."

Li dismissed speculation that the KMT's strong opposition to Chen's nomination was an election tactic to gather support for her. Taiwan People's Party candidate Wu Yi-jheng also dismissed this as a ludicrous idea.

Chen's record as Kaohsiung mayor has come under scrutiny due to her nomination. DPP candidate Chen Chi-mai predictably had only high praise for Chen and said everyone should stop smearing her.

The Legislative Yuan has the authority to approve the Control Yuan nominations. Legislators should rationally discuss the nominations and then decide whether to approve or reject them. We don't want there to be excessive smearing or intense opposition.

總統蔡英文提名陳菊作為監察院院長一案，引起國民黨立委不滿，28號晚上佔據立法院抗議。藍營高雄市長補選參選人李眉蓁29號一早拜票時強調，讓擔任過高雄市長的陳菊擔任院長就是「校長兼撞鐘」。

國民黨高雄市長補選參選人 李眉蓁表示：「之前的市府那個案子，現在都還在監察院。那如果是當初，因為之前的高雄市長，一定要是替我們市府背書，所以如果這樣子，會讓人家覺得有點"校長兼撞鐘"。」

藍營大動作抗議提名案，有人認為是要幫李眉蓁拉抬選情，李眉蓁認為外界想太多，而民眾黨推出的參選人吳益政則認為，國民黨若這樣想，就是搞不清楚狀況。

民眾黨高雄市長補選參選人 吳益政表示：「哪有一個監察院，從李登輝開始時代，改成總統提名，就它已經閹掉了，就已經閹掉了，何必咧！」

陳菊因為監察院院長提名案，過去的市政成績再度被討論，吳益政認同陳菊在人權的付出，但也認為民進黨應該檢討提名方式，而同黨的高雄市長參選人的陳其邁肯定陳菊在人權及市政上的努力，希望外界不要抹黑她。

民進黨高雄市長補選參選人 陳其邁表示：「立法院行使監委同意權，應該在立法院，好好地理性的討論，來決定贊成與否。我們也不希望說，有過多的這種抹黑，或是激化對立。」

中央的監察院院長提名案這把火燒到高雄來，藍綠白三陣營的參選人為維護各自黨團的理念，也提出不同的看法。
