During President Tsai Ing-wen's transit stop in Hawaii, she participated in a seminar organized by the Heritage Foundation in Washington through a video conference. She said that even though Taiwan continues to release goodwill, China is still trying to change the status quo. Moreover, the Hong Kong example is a warning that Taiwan needs to avoid from falling into China's traps regardless of political party.
President Tsai Ing-wen made a transit stop in Hawaii on her way back to Taiwan after visiting diplomatic allies in Oceania. During her time in Hawaii, she participated in the "Taiwan-U.S.: An Enduring Partnership in the Indo-Pacific" seminar in Washington organized by the Heritage Foundation via video conference. In her speech, she said she has always made her position clear. Her position is that she wants to maintain the status quo when it comes to cross-strait relations. However, it hasn't been easy, because China is trying to alter the status quo, raise military tensions, and limit Taiwan's international space.
Beijing has continued to focus on what they want. The 1992 Consensus, one China, and eventually a "one country, two systems" model for Taiwan. They have not thought about what the people of Taiwan want, which is to be able to maintain our way of life and the ability to make our own decision free of coercion.
Tsai said the 1992 Consensus has already turned into "one country, two systems," and "one country, two systems" will sooner or later become "one country." She cited Hong Kong as an example of "one country, two systems" in action, saying it is not respected and therefore the Hong Kong example reminds all of Taiwan's political parties that they need to avoid falling into China's traps.
Now, Hong Kong is a reminder that all politicians in Taiwan, regardless of political party, should carefully avoid falling into a trap laid by China, which include economic incentives and other promises, but ultimately leads to the same destination that is "one country, two systems."
From 1997 of Hong Kong from Great Britain to China, how it was supposed to be an autonomous transfer, a sovereign transfer, no interference from China. Here we are 22 years into it. Xi Jinping says that that contract was null and void, it no longer exists, so you say this is a case study, I think it is a wake-up call.
U.S. Representative Ted Yoho, who is the ranking member on the U.S. House Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and Nonproliferation, also said Taiwan must stand firm and make the necessary preparations. Tsai was in Hawaii for less than a day. After the seminar, she visited the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency for a briefing on emergency preparedness. She was received by U.S. Army Major General Arthur Logan, who is the adjutant general of the Hawaii National Guard. Logan presented her with a painting depicting native Hawaiians defending their homeland and expressed his desire for future cooperation.
